Spill Containment and Product Recovery

Oil Spill; Buzzards Bay, MA
CCI was contracted to respond when a barge being towed from Philadelphia to Sandwich, MA spilled 14,700 gallons of oil from a 12-foot tear in its hull into Buzzards Bay. CCI provided 50+ hazardous materials site technicians and equipment operators in response to the No. 6 oil spill.  Personnel deployed protective boom and performed cleanup of impacted areas along the shoreline, which spanned approximately 50 miles. According to the Unified Command, cleanup workers recovered approximately 4,588 cubic yards of oily solid waste. On-water skimming operations netted 3,500 gallons of oil. Workers deployed 8,500 feet of containment boom and 100,000 feet of snare.

Hydraulic Oil Spill; Concord, NC
CCI responded to an estimated 150 gallon hydraulic oil spill at the Concord Jail construction site. The spill was a result of broken hydraulic lines on a large crane. The crane was set up on a man made pad on top of a concrete slab. Excavation of the contaminated soil from the crane pad was performed removing an estimated 70 yards of soil. Confirmation samples were pulled and the pad was re-constructed.

Diesel Fuel Spill; Lumberton, NC
CCI was dispatched to perform cleanup operations from a 4,000-gallon diesel fuel spill in Lumberton, NC.  The area of contamination covered a state-owned maintenance facility. The contaminated area was sectioned off in grids and sampling was performed to assess the degree of contamination.  Once completed, the area of concern was excavated to remove the contaminated soil for transportation and disposal.  This was completed utilizing various pieces of heavy equipment.  The area was backfilled and returned to grade. More than 700 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed. The project was completed within 14 days utilizing six personnel. CCI personnel completed documentation of the incident.

Herbicide Spill; Dunn, NC
This response involved 105 gallons of DDT from two leaking 55-gallon drums. CCI personnel entered in Level B protection and overpacked two damaged drums and a smaller container that had corrosion around its base.  CCI personnel applied absorbent to the area to remove the remaining product.  Samples were taken to ensure that all product had been removed.

Pipeline Release; Patuxent River, MD
CCI provided personnel and equipment for a petroleum pipeline release on the Patuxent River. CCI responded with over 60 personnel to assist in the product recovery effort. Personnel performed operations, utilizing three boats, two skimmers, and a 3,200-gallon vacuum truck. CCI’s participation was instrumental in the recovery of thousands of gallons of product during this three-week project. CCI personnel completed documentation of the incident.

Boat Explosion; Denver, NC
CCI responded to a boat explosion on Lake Norman. CCI deployed 500’ of containment boom, and over 2000’ of absorbent boom was deployed. Although the majority of the fuel burned up during the explosion, containment and recovery efforts continued until the boat was removed from the lake. Twenty yards of contaminated waste was removed from the lake for disposal.
